This article is brought to you by our hospitable (and yummy) friends at The Z Bed & Breakfast.
When I was in school at Ole Miss (not too terribly long ago…), there weren’t many breakfast options; The Beacon (the absolute best rendition of ‘the greasy spoon’ out there), Bottletree Bakery (the humble pie is my weakness), Handy Andy biscuits, Huddle House and fast food (McDonalds and Burger King). In the last few years, places serving breakfast have been popping up all over Oxford, and we most certainly welcome them! One of my favorite things to eat on a Saturday morning doesn’t come from a restaurant at all…but you don’t have to cook it either. It’s a little-known secret, but you can order homemade cinnamon rolls from The Z Bed and Breakfast – and they are TO DIE FOR. When I say cinnamon rolls, I mean the real deal. They’re huge. They’re soft. And they’re COVERED in maple frosting. So, you don’t have to be a guest at the Z to partake in this delectable treat!
Now – I need to tell you about all of the other yummy breakfast spots in O-town! There are two great donut places, Shipley’s and Community Donuts. Big Bad Breakfast (BBB) is a diner-style restaurant opened by famed chef John Currence, winning tons of awards and recognitions. There’s an IHOP on Jackson Avenue, close to a Chik-Fil-A (just remember CFA is closed on Sundays!). Don’t forget about Jackson, MS staple: Beagle Bagel and if you’re in the market for an organic healthy food option: Living Foods on College Hill Road serves up some amazing smoothies and foods that are as specific to your health need/diet as you request.
You can grab a coffee at Starbucks, Uptown Coffee, HighPoint Coffee (2 drive thru locations,) Juva, Smoothie King and the very hip Chicory Market.
Brunch is now offered at several places, though only on weekends. Here is a list of some places that serve great brunches (and adult beverages, to boot!):
• The Ravine (reservations recommended)
• Oxford Grillehouse
• St. Leo
• Stella
• Snackbar
• Tallahatchie Gourmet
Others we haven’t tried, but have heard great things about:
• First Watch
• Southern Table
• Brick & Spoon
I must admit, The Beacon and Bottletree Bakery are staples in this community for a reason – their food is amazing. Just be prepared, on ballgame weekends you will have a wait! But we have so many options now – you’ll have to visit several times to try them all out!
