Safety with the Push of a Button

The University of Mississippi goes above and beyond to ensure the safety of their students. There are several options out there that help keep students and parents informed as well as way to keep their students safe. Here are a few that I am aware of that can help keep your student safe while on campus.

LiveSafe is a mobile safety app that the University of Mississippi provides to all students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and visitors to download for free. The app provides a quick, convenient and discreet way to communicate directly with UM safety officials to better protect you. On the app, you have the ability to immediately report suspicious activity in the area. By leveraging the community's eyes and ears, LiveSafe helps to keep the campus safe by preventing crimes before they occur.

The Crime Prevention Program of UPD coordinates the Rebel Patrol Student Escort Service. Rebel Patrol escorts offer on-campus walk-along escorts for anyone concerned about walking alone on campus. UPD officers are available to provide on-campus escorts when Rebel Patrol escorts are not on duty. For an escort, call UPD at 915-7234. This could be a great option for your student if he or she has night classes.

The University has an emergency telephone system referred to as “Code Blue” which involves the strategic location of emergency telephones on campus. By pressing the button on the emergency telephone pole, you will immediately be in contact with UPD for assistance with any emergency situation. Click here to see a map of blue light locations on campus.

UPD also has an active crime prevention program which strives to eliminate or minimize criminal opportunities when possible. Crime prevention presentations are routinely scheduled for campus residents, as well as faculty and staff groups. Topics generally covered are:

  • Rape and Sexual Assault Risk Reduction

  • Domestic Violence Education

  • Workplace Violence Education

  • Personal Safety

  • Rape Aggression Defense Systems

  • Sexual Assault

  • Alcohol and Drug Awareness

  • Travel Safety

  • Operation Identification – Property Protection

During my freshman year, my EDHE class spent a day doing the active crime prevention program with UPD. The presentation was “What to do if There’s an Active Shooter,” and I learned so many valuable pieces of information that I didn’t know before!

As an Ole Miss student myself, I can honestly say that I’ve never felt unsafe on our campus, but it’s comforting to know we have the amount of resources we do. UPD has a very strong presence on campus, so you can go to bed each night knowing your student is safe! Here are a few resources that I am aware of that can help keep us safe while on campus.
