Back To School Routines

Elementary, middle, and high school students are set to go back to school this August. While many school systems and districts are developing their own styles of "back to school" this year, each student will still have the opportunity to learn. No matter what style of learning or teaching your school district develops, there are several ways that parents and guardians can try to make this school year as normal as possible.

1. Buy a first day of school outfit. Whether your student will be attending in-person classes or learning remotely or online, buy your student an outfit to celebrate the first day back at school. Try to purchase locally to support the small businesses in your town. To support a local Starkville business, check out Doodlebugs - A Southern Style Children's Store.

2. Set a schedule. Make sure your student knows their schedule. What time will they wake up, get dressed, have meals, breaks, naps, and bedtime? Write out a schedule on a calendar or white board for them to visually see each day. Having structure and set times each day will help your students realize what has to be done and in what order.

3. Spend one-on-one time with each child. Your student may feel overwhelmed, nervous, or confused about the changes that may take place this school year. Make sure you comfort them, let them know they are loved, and provide support for each of your children. Set aside 20-30 minutes of uninterrupted time with each of your children to work on a difficult subject, play with their favorite toys, or enjoy a meal together. This will mean more to them than you can imagine.

Don't let the craziness that a new school year brings become even stranger this year. Remind your children that they are loved, and help them understand what is happening around them in the best way you can.
