Internships - Advice from a Graduate

Getting a summer internship is one of the most important things to do while in college. Pre-COVID, I always thought my internship experience would lead me to moving to a new city for the summer, but I could not be more thankful for the internship I found right here in Oxford with Parents of College Students.

My biggest piece of advice to college students searching for internships is to reach out to companies even if you do not see an opening on their website. The only reason I was able to have this amazing experience is because I found the company’s email, introduced myself, and sent in my resume. Taking initiative goes a long way, and it is something that I was reminded of everyday whether it was working on projects or even when it came time to start applying for jobs.

Throughout my time with Parents of College Students, I had the opportunity to assist with the rebranding of the company, help with intern team expansion, and collaborate on a multitude of new and exciting projects. Not only did I gain the skills that will help me excel in my future career, but I was able to get the real-world experiences in the industry that my future employers will look for. Luckily, I was able to achieve this in a great work environment surrounded by encouraging mentors and an amazing group of fellow interns!

Although it is great to find an internship in big cities, another part of what made this internship so special is connecting with the community right here in Oxford. Working alongside local businesses and people made my appreciation for this town so much stronger. I will be forever grateful for my time with the Parents of College Students family!
