Chicory Market: Oxford’s Heartbeat in a Grocery Aisle

Chicory Market stands out as more than just a grocery store here in Oxford—it’s a cultural hub, a farmer’s market reborn, and a beacon of local pride. Originating in 2017, the vision of Oxford native Kate Bishop and her husband John Martin, the market transformed a long-standing food space into a vibrant center for locally-sourced cuisine and community connection.

Roots That Run Deep

Before Chicory Market emerged first on the very north portion of North Lamar is what was Liz Stagg's old "Farmers Market." John and Kate wanted to grow Liz's mission: to foster a local food economy, strengthen farmer–consumer relationships, and ensure fresh, healthy options for all – regardless of income.

A Dynamic Shift and New Home

By early 2024, Chicory Market had seemingly outgrown its original footprint. With gratitude and planning, they secured a USDA grant to relocate to a spacious venue in the Midtown Shopping Center—an opportunity to expand their vendor family and enhance community programming. The move to the former Sears space at 707 North Lamar debuted in January 2024, ushering in a clearer, more welcoming shopping experience.

What You’ll Find Inside

Chicory Market is anchored by partnerships with more than 75 local farmers and artisan producers, including ventures like Johnston Hill Creamery, Home Place Pastures, Heartbreak Coffee, and Vine Bottle Shop.

  • Fresh produce — everything from Clear Creek Tomatoes and Strawberries to Delta-grown rice to Calhoun County sweet potatoes

  • Deli & grab‑and‑go items — sandwiches, salads, soups, casseroles, and sushi on select days

  • Specialty counters — cheese from Johnston Hill, freshly roasted coffee from High Point Coffee, pasture-raised meats, and even fresh seafood counter with top notch oysters, shrimp, and fish!

Bridging Food and Fellowship

Chicory Market shines in its dual role as vendor space and social nexus. From communal dinners and cooking classes to civic events like the Oxford Juneteenth Festival, the market is built on community-first ideals. Staff often include university students, local celebrities, and passionate staff.

Looking Ahead

With their expanded location, Kate and John also host an Atrium, constantly flocked by students to chat or study. The atrium is also available for rental and hosts events of their own like Sunday Supper Clubs, wine and cheese nights, and craft making classes to name a few.
