Orientation: Class Registration

How to register for classes

Applying for classes can be complicated, but it does not have to be. For a new student, the idea of making your schedule from scratch is a bit daunting. There are an endless amount of classes in the course catalogue that range from Greek Mythology to Chemistry. So how do you know you are taking the right classes your freshman year?

Ole Miss requires all majors include a variety of core classes. These depend on your individual major, but mostly include 100 level classes. For example, if you are an Accounting major you may be required to take more math classes then an English major. When registering for classes the first time it is important to look at the list of requirements for your individual major. However, if you have not yet declared a major it is okay. The university actually suggests that being undeclared your freshman year is a good way to figure out exactly what you want to study. This is why core classes are important to take at the beginning of your college career.

During orientation there is time allotted to schedule your first semester. If you are undeclared, the Center for Student Success & First-Year Experience will help advise you on what classes to register for. On the other hand, if you have already selected a major an advisor from that particular school will help you enroll. Because there are many new students trying to enroll at the same time, the process can often seem stressful. That is why it is important to plan ahead. Follow the steps below to make sure registration goes smoothly.

  1. Print out a list of required classes for your major before attending your registration meeting.

  2. Make sure you know your student ID number and login information. Your user name can be found by looking at the beginning part of your university email. It often is the first initial of your first and middle name followed by the first five of your last name.

  3. Try logging on to the myOleMiss portal using your username. Set up a password ahead of time to make sure you can access this site before its time register for classes.

  4. Check your registration window on myOleMiss. This is under the registration tab on the main student page.

  5. If you have a list of core classes you need to take, go ahead and look at the times they are offered. You can do this by going to your myOleMiss account and clicking on “My Favorites.” This is a great way to look up classes before its time to register. Having your ideal schedule (and a couple back up classes) planned out as "favorites," will help make registration a breeze.

  6. Ask questions! Don’t be afraid to ask for help or clarification when signing up for classes. It’s better to be 100% sure you are enrolled in the right classes before the first day of the semester.

These are just a few of the most important things to remember during course registration. For more information look at the Center for Student Success & First-Year Experience website here.
