Students have the freedom to take their prerequisite courses somewhere else so they can focus on their major classes at Auburn. This is more convenient, less expensive, and most of the time easier than courses at Auburn. Sometimes students need to take a class or two in the summer at a community college to give them a chance to boost their gpa, get ahead on their course work, or make up a class. This is where it is important to understand the ins-and-outs of transfer credits.
Some students have experience with AP and Dual Enrollment classes in high school that prepare them for courses at Auburn. With a certain grade, these classes can be transferable. Students also decided to go to a community college for two years, and then transfer to Auburn. Transfer credits apply to all of these. Not all credits transfer when coming in from a community college, another University, or from high school pre-college courses. You can go to http://www.auburn.edu/administration/registrar/transfers.html#coursesByState to make sure the courses your student has taken or is wanting to take will give them credit at Auburn.
The best prerequisites to take that are available for transferring from most colleges are biology, chemistry, English, literature, economics, history, and math. These are basic classes for most majors and can be a stepping stone into other courses.
Current Auburn students can take up to 6 hours each summer at another school to be transferred to receive credit. Students can transfer credits throughout their 4 years, but their last 30 hours must be taken at Auburn. When your student is finished with their transfer course, they need to send their transcripts to the Office of the Registrar. Get your student on track to graduate on time or even graduate early, and use their time wisely. Transfer credits are the way to go!
